How to measure an opening

Capture the door width, height, and rough opening without mixing up the measurements.

Step-by-step guide

  1. 1Measure the existing door leaf from edge to edge for nominal door width.
  2. 2Measure the door leaf from top to bottom for nominal door height.
  3. 3Measure the framed wall opening separately and label it as the rough opening.
  4. 4Record each dimension in inches and note whether the opening is new or a replacement.
