Step-by-step guide
- 1Measure the existing door leaf edge to edge and record its actual (net) width, not the nominal order size.
- 2Measure the door leaf from top to bottom and record its actual (net) height.
- 3Measure the framed wall opening separately and label it as the rough opening.
- 4Record each dimension in inches and note whether the opening is new or a replacement.
Guide notes
Door size and rough-opening size are different measurements. Measure the door leaf directly for door width and height, then measure the wall opening separately. Keep the two sets of dimensions clearly labeled.
