Measure hinge and lock locations
Learn where preparation measurements start and what must match on a replacement opening.
Step 1 of 4
Step-by-step guide
- 1Confirm whether the opening is new construction or a replacement.
- 2For a replacement, measure hinge locations from the stated top reference to the top of each hinge preparation.
- 3Measure the lock centerline from the same stated reference and record the reference used.
- 4Do not mix edge, centerline, and top-of-preparation measurements; submit a photo when uncertain.
Transcript
Replacement doors and frames must match the existing hinge and lock preparations. The reference point matters. Record where each measurement begins, whether the value is to a top edge or centerline, and provide photos when the existing preparation is unclear. Exact manufacturer tables are available to approved customers.
